Blame the media ! All this TV, playstations, cell phones, Internet and DVDs is the cause of ADHD, obesity and will negatively impact on your child’s health. A sweeping generalisation, as my father was so fond of saying ! Before we examine the hyperactive child and the other problem areas associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), let us look at some common symptoms and some solutions for children with rather special needs.

It will probably be the child’s teacher who will first notice that there may be a problem as the child (if indeed s/he has ADHD). Non-stop motion, fidgeting and failure to focus are going to impact negatively on the child’s grades. Disruptive children may also impact negatively on their brothers and sisters’ academic achievements merely by the disturbance and noise they make. Not to mention putting a strain on the parents’ marriage. Once properly diagnosed, you will have to make an informed choice about ADHD medications but here are four tips to help you cope with the hyperactivity.

1st – Reduce Media Use. All media is not bad. It may be educational or just for fun. The main thing you can do as a parent is to find out what your kids are watching and doing with this stuff. Even soft porn TV programs can lead to kids imitating what they see on the screen , leading to a rather too early experimentation with sex. Much better to control the use of the media and explain that sex and violence are a no-no and why ! Then, make sure that there is lots of active outdoor stuff you can do with them – hiking, biking and skating, just to mention a few.

2nd – Plan Your Kids’ Day. Just a bit of planning and telling your child what is going to happen during the day makes a great difference to you and him or her. First your child knows what is coming and so do you ! This helps to reduce stress and chaos all round.

3rd- The Teacher Is Your Ally. You need to have a really good relationship with their teacher.
You can check with her about how your child is behaving in the classroom. It is a good way of keeping an eye on their progress because a lot of the hyperactivity may occur in the classroom setting – answering out of turn, relationships with classmates, interrupting and inability to focus.

4th – Avoid Shopping Malls. If you have shopping to do, try to make sure that you don’t drag your kid along. Research has shown that this type of outing is upsetting for children with ADHD. Much better to make sure that the child stays with a friend at home, while you get a break and can do your shopping in peace !

If your child has hyperactive attention deficit disorder, this is hard on you and makes life a struggle for a child. Your child probably gets in trouble at school for behaviors that are not his fault because he really can’t control them. Hyperactive Kids with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) often get into trouble in there school, home or wherever they frequent mainly because of their attitude resulting in a lowing of confidence and self esteem. With the lack of understanding of this problem it often causes Teachers and parents to translate this behavior as being lazy or unmotivated because of their difficulty to sit still, wait patiently or concentrate for any length of time.

What are the hyperactive kids symptoms?

There are different types of ADD and below are some of the tell tale signs:

1. A short attention span for things that do not interest them e.g. school work, household chores etc.

2. They never complete any tasks they start.

3. Their disorganization e.g. their untidiness due to no interest in keeping things in order.

4. Uncontrollable impulse. They tend to act immediately without any thought of outcome.

Which ever of the types of ADD/ADHD your child might have these above symptoms would be common and exist for a period of time although in some cases the symptoms might not have developed until your child started school.

The truth is that hyperactive kids do try to succeed time and time again but with all the negative feed back they receive, it is easier to accept being unsuccessful and to give in without a struggle.

Helping Hyperactive Kid?

The best and first thing to remember is that he is still your son and like most kids he’s not perfect so accept him for who he is. He may feel like a failure but is important that you do not in any way back up these thoughts for example stating to him that you wished he was good at sports or school etc. and explain that everyone can make make mistakes. As a parent give your child your unconditional love and reassure him his importance to you and that you will love him regardless of his achievements.

Find out your child’s interest and something he can do well in whether it is only a hobby as simple as fishing or learning an instrument and show some interest in his achievements encouraging him when he does well and not to discourage too much at any failures he comes across.

Praise him for doing well and also remember to praise him for just trying but don’t repeatitly give the same reactions good or bad as the praise will seem worthless but what your end goal is for him too try harder for himself as well as you.

One of the greatest gifts you can learn is turning a negative mind to a positive one without the knowledge of the person you are doing it to. This is a fantastic skill that can be easily learnt and developed quickly through practice.

Is There a Diet For Hyperactivity? Looking at the Various Options Before Deciding What is Best

I do not think there is a diet for hyperactivity but I do believe that avoiding certain foods will certainly reduce symptoms and will make life much more tolerable for both parents and children. The main allergies that ADHD kids seem to have are connected with gluten (wheat, bread and pasta) and casein (cheese and milk). It has been shown that when certain kids are exposed to these foods, their ADHD symptoms become worse so it is well worth while finding out if your child is allergic to any of these.

There is some scientific research done by The Australian Institute For Child Health although it was a very small sample of children. But it did point up some useful reminders about how much a role food does actually play in a diet for hyperactivity. Once the children were exposed to certain foods they were allergic to or could not just tolerate, their ADHD symptoms, measured on the standard Connors Scale actually shot up. Their counterparts who did not have ADHD had much lower scores all round.

I know a girl who is suffering from mild autism and the parents decided that they would have a shot of giving her the famous GFCF (gluten free and casein free ) diet. It took about six weeks to get her completely weaned off the pasta and ice cream but the results were so impressive that they have decided to continue with it although they recognize that it is by no means a cure but the girl has a lot more good days now, thanks to following that diet.

The Feingold diet for hyperactivity has received a lot of praise and some criticism too. The Feingolds have gone further than just casein and gluten free foods and have included all the preservatives, additives and chemicals in kids’ foods to-day and which can play havoc with a child’s nervous system and exacerbate ADHD symptoms such as hyperactivity and restlessness. But I know people who have had great success with this when they persevere. One family I knew had a very problematic ADHD child, but they never looked back after trying out that diet for six weeks.

So, although a diet for hyperactivity may not exist, following some of the above guidelines will certainly help. The real issue is how to address disruptive behavior and what sort of child behavior modification can be put into practice. The other secret is to avoid using psychostimulants as they do not really address the essential ADHD issues.

You might be planning a holiday for your family and you might be thinking that a city break or a visit to Disneyland might be a great idea. But sometimes, long queues at airports or travelling in a cramped up space may not be the best way to give the hyperactive kids the break they need. But avoiding sugary snacks or breakfast cereals is a great way to start the day. Some protein at breakfast is always a good idea as that can prevent a sugar crash later on.

Making sure they have enough vitamin C and D is also important. Studies show that these vitamins are crucial when it comes to maintaining brain efficiency and hyperactive kids need all the help they can get. Research shows that these two vitamins actually can play a decisive role in preventing ischemia which is a sort of brain damage sue to oxidative stress and which can really reduce the supply of blood to the brain.
